The International Research Group in Financial and Fiduciary Ethics (φ) is an international network of university researchers and students, and business professionals. The French acronym is GIREFφ. Founded by Professor Andrée De Serres of École des sciences de la gestion de l’Université du Québec à Montréal and Professor Michel Roux, Dean of the Economics and Business Management Faculty of Université Paris 13, GIREFφ’s goal is to develop and promote research in fiduciary ethics and raise trust in governance among organizations. It is also dedicated to the integration of ethical values in financial decisions.
GIREFφ’ s rallying force is its understanding of the methods and factors that reinforce the perception of the reliability and durability of organizations. That is critical to the efficiency of the financial market systems of 1) Canada, the United States, France and the United Kingdom, 2) the organizations evolving within these systems, and 3) the institutions supporting them.
Since the perception of reliability can vary from one nation and culture to another and from one institutional framework to another, the current state of market globalization compels us to remain fully aware that any crisis can degenerate in systemic crisis. Furthermore, the consequences can spread far beyond the border of the country where it originated.
GIREFφ is a forum for dialogue and the free exchange of ideas, information and opinions. Its goal is to create partnerships, more specifically to assemble partners from universities, financial institutions, corporations, governments and their regulatory bodies, unions and non-governmental organizations.
GIREFφ’s members, together with academic and business sector partners, regularly hold seminars, conferences and colloquiums in Canada and in other countries. Many attendees are involved in publishing books and papers on a wide spectrum of financial issues. As well, GIREFφ partners have been a catalytic force behind the creation of the Coalition for the Protection of Investors. The Coalition has submitted Briefs to the Public Finance Committee of Quebec National Assembly and made the Briefs available within financial circles.
The continuous participation of university students in the GIREFφ is on a par with the mission of the network which is the development of research in financial and fiduciary ethics. GIREFφ partnerships are designed to encourage greater interactions and to expand participation of researchers and students. The actions of the network tally with their formation. On their side, the students impel with the partners of the GIREFφ to provide them with research projects, to propose orientation and to be a link between the universities, the research laboratories and the business world.
